The freckled boy stares with slack-jawed awe and a little accusation, as if it’s her fault he can’t.
Olivia smiles wryly. She gets it.
He’s seen a kinetic breathe life back into his mother when she was burning up with typhoid, or turn lead into gold. What magical power.
“It’s not so great.” She’d switch places with him in a heartbeat, this kid with a life ahead of him to spend as he chooses.
